Every Fall our country celebrates Native American Heritage Month to honor the customs, traditions, and contributions of the first inhabitants of America.
Before Europeans settled our land, hundreds of Indian tribes lived in North and South America. In fact, numerous tribes lived and continue to live in South Carolina to include the Catawba, Eastern Cherokee, Congaree, Cheraw, Edisto, Waccamaw, Santee, and Nachez. Many of our rivers in the state are named after these tribes.
As with any culture, it is important to understand and appreciate the rich history of the Native Americans.
Below are several short videos – the first focuses on the Congaree and Catawba tribes in SC, the second on Native Americans across our country, and the third on Native Americans across the world.
